Match preview by Cayden Sands
Overview:
Thackley’s search for their first victory of 2025 continues on Saturday when they travel to Penistone Church in the NCEL Premier Division.
After securing their first point of the year against Parkgate last weekend, the Dennyboys will be hoping that they can go one better and secure an important victory as the battle for the play offs enters the final 10 games of the season.
Last time out, Thackley were held to a 2-2 draw by Parkgate FC, despite having plenty of chances to take the 3 points during the game itself. The final touch was missing that afternoon, but expectations ahead of the game tomorrow will be even greater as key players Ben Grech-Brooksbank and Lewis Sugden return to the team following their suspensions, leaving Danny Forrest with a strong group of players to select the team from.
The Opposition:
Penistone Church have enjoyed a mostly solid campaign at this stage of the season, with the team currently sitting just outside of the play-off places in the league table, whilst they have also made it to the last eight of the NCEL League Cup.
The side have picked up some strong results, including a pair of convincing victories against Rossington Main, which came by 4-1 and 3-0 score-lines respectively, as well as a 5-2 victory over Pickering Town and two victories away at Campion, once in the league and once in the League Cup.
However, the Barnsley club have struggled to pick up results against those teams also in the promotion conversation, with losses against Silsden AFC, Golcar United, Handsworth FC, Hallam FC and Albion Sports evidencing their struggles.
The most notable strength that Saturday’s hosts possess is their goal scoring ability, with their leading scorer being Nathan Keightley, who has managed to score an impressive 21 goals in all competitions this season, whilst forward Samuel Scrivens has managed to score 10.
Previous Meeting:
The previous encounter between Thackley and Penistone was the definition of a classic in the NCEL Premier Division, with the hosts prevailing by a 3-2 scoreline at the Meridian Stadium at Dennyfield earlier on in the season thanks to second half efforts from Ben Grech-Brooksbank and former Penistone player Antony Brown, with the latter bagging two goals.
The Parker Roofing Memorial Ground has not been a happy venue for the Dennyboys over recent seasons and tomorrow is no doubt going to be another tough match, with Thackley needing to be at their best if they are to come away with a positive result.
