Thackley 2 Tadcaster Albion 1 - Match Report

It's Thackley's turn to take advantage of a late goal to claim all three points.

Thackley 2 Tadcaster Albion 1 – Match Report.

NCEL Premier Division – Saturday 2nd November 2024 – Kick Off 3.00pm.

Thackley returned to Dennyfield after a three week absence to take on Tadcaster Albion. The two had met just two weeks ago at Ings Lane, where Thackley came away with all three points in a 4-2 victory. Thackley relied on the same starting eleven that performed so well at Handsworth last Saturday. The only change being Lewis Garner’s return to the bench following his suspension.

In the opening fifteen minutes both sides showed that the game was unlikely to finish goalless, both creating a couple of good chances to take the lead. Elliott Andrew heading wide before bringing a good save from Thackley keeper Michael Roxburgh, the ball hitting the post before being cleared. Sam Green in the visitor’s goal was the saviour for the away side, saving from both Antony Brown and Ben Grech-Brooksbank after both were set up by Finn Donovan. Both sets of forwards were looking dangerous. A header from Grech-Brooksbank went narrowly wide, as did one from Andrew following a James Knowles free kick, this one via the post. It seemed a goal was imminent and it was Tadcaster that opened the scoring. Luca Bolino, with a dazzling run, evaded numerous defenders to end up in the box, the ball found its way to Andrew, who fired into the bottom corner. Thackley pushed to get back on level terms, the front four working hard and putting the away side under pressure. Luke Rhodes had a header go wide, a similar fate befell Lewis Sugden’s free kick and some stoic defending was keeping Thackley at bay. There were a couple of bookings before the break, Sugden for Thackley and Charlie Owen for the visitors after a rugby tackle on Tawheed Ahmed as he skipped past him. Tadcaster took their one goal advantage into the break, Thackley needed to start to convert their chances into goals.

Half time: Thackley 0 Tadcaster Albion 1.

Thackley made a change at the beginning of the second half, Will Morrissey coming on for Joe Mitchell. Thackley continued to press from the start and Grech-Brooksbank’s close range volley just cleared the bar before the home side equalised. The goal came via Donovan, who again was giving his full back the run around, getting to the by line and crossing for Brown to convert at the far post. Thackley continued to press, the threat coming down the flanks, Donovan and Ahmed getting balls into the box. Tadcaster had Green to thank on a number of occasions, as Thackley looked for the winner. This second period was being played out in the Tadcaster half. Lewis Gardner replaced Ahmed, who again had had another good afternoon, as the game entered the final minutes. Despite all their second half possession it looked like Thackley would have to settle for a point. Sugden made way for Matt Dempsey as the game moved into time added on. A dangerous time this for Thackley, for they have conceded a goal in this period in their last three league games. However, it was they that took advantage of a very late goal. Donovan picked up a yellow card before he was played in down the right, as he moved into the box he was upended, the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Grech-Brooksbank made no mistake in scoring the winner. Ben Bodle picked up Thackley’s third yellow card before the final whistle.

Full time: Thackley 2 Tadcaster Albion 1.

Thackley had not been at their best in the opening half but still created a number of chances but allowed Tadcaster the same opportunities and conceded a goal. An improved second half saw them dominate play, scoring two goals and securing all three points.

Next up is Frickley Athletic on Tuesday night, can Thackley extend it to five games without defeat?
