Thackley travel to Goole on Tuesday night looking to bounce back from a number of disappointing results. They have lost their last three games but have done enough in all three to warrant getting something from the game. The result of the FA Cup tie on Saturday at Warrington Rylands was a harsh reflection of the game. Until the last ten minutes, the game looked to be heading for a goalless draw and a replay but it did not work out that way.
Goole first entered the NCEL at the start of the 1999 season, spending six seasons in the league before winning promotion to the Northern Premier League. They were relegated back into the NCEL in 2018 and have struggled somewhat since their return. It looks like things have changed little this season, for the Vikings find themselves next to bottom of the table. Goole have won just one of their five league games, however, that was against Penistone Church who currently top the table. The three goals they scored in the 3-2 victory in that game at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, are the only goals they have managed in their five league games. They did not have a game this weekend, their last match being a 6-0 defeat at Tadcaster Albion last Tuesday. Goole did win their opening game in this season’s FA Cup against Lincoln United, however, they went out in the next round, beaten by Melton Town. Goole have recently had a change of manager, Nathan Helliwell stepping down and replaced by Reon Potts and Elliott Pearson. Often a change of manager results in a change of fortunes.
Goole and Thackley met three times last season, twice in league games, the third was in the FA Cup at Dennyfield. Goole came out on top in that game, they also won the league match at Thackley 5-2. In the reverse league fixture at Goole, Thackley took all three points with a 2-1 victory.
Thackley will be looking for three points from this game after losing out in their last league game at home to Golcar. A goal in the last minute denied them a point against the only team in the league to still have a one hundred percent record. Thackley did create enough chances to have won that game but did not capitalise on them.
Midweek games are never the easiest to predict, both teams will be wanting the three points and another close encounter is expected.
